Wish You Were Here (Again) - Sightings for Thurs Dec 29, 2011

Whale Lovers,
 
Clearer. Warmer.  Sunnier.  Calmer. Glassier surface. Greater visibility above and below the surface....all this and gorgeously cooperativ cetaceans too!  Here is what we observed closely:
 
4 Gray Whales (together in a group;  many tail flukes, etc)
500 Common Dolphins (two pods)
20 Risso's Dolphins
Abundant harbor seals, sea lions, Rhinoceros and Cassin's auklets. One nice Peregrine Falcon crossed our bow.

Fun in the Sun for Wed Dec 28, 2011

Whale Lovers,
 
Clear. Warm.  Sunny.  Calm. Great visibility above and below the surface....all this and cetaceans too!  I must have gone to heaven.
 
5 Gray Whales closely followed (many more in the distance)
500 Common Dolphins (Mat says 300...)
Abundant sea lions and Rhinoceros auklets.

Sightings for Tuesday, Dec 27, 2011

Cetacean Amigos,
 
I am finding it difficult to come up with new superlatives every day about the wonderful weather and sea conditions we've been having out on the Channel for the past week.  Well, suffice it to say, it was beautiful again today out there.  Here are the species that we followed closely (others were seen here and there in the distance):
 
4 Gray Whales
1,000 Common Dolphins
1 Osprey (flying between Pelican Bay and Prisoner's Harbor)

Monday, Dec 26 Sightings report

Yet another stunning winter day out on the Channel.  Clear, crisp and calm seas. Our guest captain Anthony, along with crew members Matt R. and Brooke B, helped spot the following wildlife:
 
5 Gray Whales (2 mid Channel and 3 along the north face of SCI)
25 Risso's Dolphins (very close approach to the boat; some played with a Gray Whale)
10 Dall's Porpoise (a few rode the bow)
California Sea Lions rafting here and there

After a good long sighting of a single southound Gray Whale, we headed into Santa Cruz Passage.  It was a mild but wintery day with occassional very light sprinkles...not enough to force the whale watchers inside.. Here are the wildlife sightings:

Today was our first trip since we got the boat back in the water this week (after our bi-annual maintenance haul out).  We ran east and ended up on the south side of Anacapa Island.  Here are the wildlife sightings:
