Short Tailed Albatross NST

My Bad...

First off, nobody saw any Albatross today. (NST= Not Seen Today)  I was just checking to see if any of you bird lovers were paying attention.  Cheap trick.  Sorry Todd, and Wes, and Bernardo.  If anyone wants the pelagic birds added to these reports more often, drop me an email <Mr.Zalophus@gmail.com> and we can do this...no lies.

As many of you know, the ocean has not been a good place for anyone this past weekend.  Gale winds and high seas have made all boats with any sense stay inside the harbor.  But today the situation improved, and this is what the Condor Express watched closely:

1 Humpback Whale
50 common dolphins

Sign up now to see the show, you never know what Mother Nature has in store for you in the way of fabulous sightings when you come on board. Make your reservations now and see the Humpbacks, Blues, plus  whatever else is happening out there in our wonderful Channel.  We are truly fortunate to live and play where we do, and this is the best it gets as far as the Spring season.  Oh, yeah!

Humpbacks seen feeding !!

Nature Lovers,

It was nice on this side of the Channel, and a bit bumpy outside.  This is what the Condor Express watched closely today:

4 Humpback Whales

Among the behaviors we observed closely today, there were several surface lunge feedings by these Humpbacks.  This is a sure indication that the krill has migrated to the surface.  If the krill stays up for a while, as it did last year, it will be showtime out there on the grounds and you don't want to miss it.  It is one of the natural wonders of the world.

Oh, yeah!

Humpbacks whale on the Condor Express!

Second Trip of the Day
Sunday May 22

Wasn't yesterday supposed to be the end of the world?   Glad nobody told the whales.

Today the Condor Express ran a second, private party whale watch honoring Michael Smith and his gray whale counters. The cetaceans appeared to sense that there were kindred spirits on board.

We watched 4 Humpbacks in the mid channel area, and 2 of them were extremely friendly.  These two bumpy-headed monsters rolled around, slapped their pectoral fins, rubbed against the Condor Express and each other, and thoroughly entertained themselves and the whale census volunteers on board.  And then, just like what happened on the early trip with the Blue Whales....here come the Pacific White-Sided Dolphins!  There was a lot of interspecies interaction between the humpies and the lags.

The past two days have not only had extremely good large and small cetacean interactions, but the water in the channel has been crystal clear.

You can see this for yourself in yesterday's trip shots:   blue water whales!

Blues and Lags run amok!

Channel Lovers,

Another day of fairly calm seas, and it was a day of unusual interspecies interactions.   This is what the Condor Express watched closely today:

4 Blue Whales  (more tall spouts in the distance)
Humpback Whales  (in the area, but not followed closely)
1200 Common Dolphins
50 Pacific White-Sided Dolphins (aka, Lags, Lagenomorpha obliquidens)

We followed 4 Blue Beasts as they dove, spouted and raced around a bit.  A nice sized pod of White-Siders came in and the fun began. The White Siders rode the bow of the Condor Express when the whales were down, then moved over and rode the bow of the Blue Whales when they were up and racing.  This went on for over an hour.  Amazing interspecies interactions.. Oh, yeah!

Pelagic Birds Sighted - April 30

Here is the list of seabirds and pelagic birds recorded by one of the expert trip leaders from the Condor Express pelagic bird trip, Saturday April 30th.  This 14 hour expedition set up the coast to Point Conception, then west to a point approximately 38 miles from Point Arguello, then south to the Rodriguez Dome area, continued south and finally took a northeasterly track home through the gap between Sta Rosa and San Miguel Island.  Seas were rough, but not as bad as forecasters predicted, and the highlight of the trip was a close encounter with a Murphy's Petrel.

The next scheduled joint LA Audubon/Condor Express pelagic adventure will be July 23 to the San Juan Seamount.   Call (805) 882-0088 for trip information and reservations.

An Island Kayak trip runs smack into the Mother Lode of Whales !!

Whale Lovers,

Dateline:  Sunday, May 1st - Santa Barbar Channel

Okay, so were on a private charter trip taking 38 young executives out for a morning of fantastic kayaking along the northwest corner of Santa Cruz Island.  It was bright, sunny and only a gentle breeze at times.  On the way to the island there were numerous Humpacks and spouts all over the whaling grounds, but what intrigued all of us including many kayakers from all across our great nation, was one particularly tall and straight spout.  Could this be a Blue Whale?  The prime objective was, of course, a morning of kayaks.  But after the kayaks had be loaded back up and we were heading home, we hit the "mother lode."   All of the following were seen together on one HOT SPOT...and this was not a whale watching trip!

6 Humpback Whales (tons of more spouts all around us in the distance
and...
1 Blue Whale !
